THE HI POINT RESIDENCE

Hi Point Residence Los Angeles

Mid City

The preexisting home on this Los Angeles lot consisted of a beautiful, expansive yard and a dated Spanish traditional single-family residence. The newly designed home not only modernized this home, but took advantage of the traditional elements that truly make this home charming. A second floor addition to the home is not only a seamless incorporation of additional space, but allows the facade to make a statement for its Spanish roots. It is representative of values that prioritize acceptance through working to integrate any differences into a community, as seen through varying roof and window types. Each part of the facade is skewed and specifically designed to not only project the depth and beauty of difference embraced in Spanish design, but also indicates a separation of programs on the interior that is experienced within the residence as well. Though each part of the facade is individualized to the interior program, the differences flawlessly work together to truly present a warm and welcoming residence.

What was once a dark entryway now is open and bright, welcoming guests and residents into a residence that not only allows for functional living, but also becomes a comfortable and relaxing space to spend time in. The preserved traditional style of this home further helps to contrast the modern Los Angeles city, transporting residents into a warm environment they can call home and be excited to come back to.

Spanish homes are often known for the use of beautiful terracotta tiles, and thus these were used on not only the roof, but on the entry and bathrooms to bring warm tones into the home. This warmth was prioritized to be felt throughout the entire home, where the clean white walls are given life through textured embellishments and red hues paying homage to the terracotta tiles. Additionally, the original wood-burning fireplace was preserved, being one of the first elements featured in the home through a beautiful arched entry. These arched openings were inspired by the preexisting arches, being widened for a more continuous and open floor plan, yet still providing intimate spaces that indicate separated programs. Upon entry, a vaulted ceiling is featured in front of a stunning curved staircase, intricately designed iron handrails lining the stair for an added traditional element also highlighted in delicate furniture pieces. Further, this elegant entrance embraces the organic use of curvature throughout the residence, which provides a consistent feel to the home that is necessary in such an ever changing city.
