7 New Kitchens With Dark and Moody Elements

Ballentine Architects’ Hunter project is featured in Houzz.

See how pros play with dark finishes and features to create stylish kitchens with strokes of drama

Dark and moody interiors are on the rise, according to the latest Houzz search data. The trend is likely a reaction to whites and grays dominating interiors in recent years, prompting many homeowners to look for something different. Dark elements can add instant drama and sophistication. Here, design and remodeling pros share how they used dark features and details to create stylish kitchens with moody atmospheres.

Granite Sophistication

Designer: Adam Hunter
Architect: Ben Ballentine of Ballentine Architects Studio
General contractor: Elite Remodeling and Construction
Location: West Hollywood, California

Homeowners’ request. “The goal for this kitchen was to design a sophisticated, modern space that would serve as the centerpiece of the home,” architect Ben Ballentine says. “Our objective was to move away from the outdated look of the previous kitchen and adopt a luxurious design, striking a balance between beauty and functionality. The space was in need of a complete transformation, including upgrading materials, finishes and layout. The introduction of a darker and richer color palette brought the desired level of sophistication and depth to the room.”

Dark and moody elements. Dark granite countertops. Bronze metal backsplash. Charcoal gray cabinetry. “A key decision was to select Magma Gold for the island granite,” Ballentine says. “It’s a captivating centerpiece with its deep black base and striking veining. It’s a very beautiful and unique stone. To introduce warmth and opulence, we incorporated luxurious bronze finishes. The bronze fixtures and hardware perfectly contrast the dark elements.”

Designer tip. “One design trick I recommend to homeowners is using layered textures to add depth and interest to their spaces,” Ballentine says. “By incorporating a mix of materials such as fabrics, woods, metals and stones, you can create a rich, multidimensional look that makes a room feel warm and inviting.”

“Uh-oh” moment. “When working on condo remodeling and reconfiguration projects, it’s common to encounter existing infrastructure that services multiple units above and below,” Ballentine says. “This includes gas lines and water lines, which can be difficult to work around, especially when dealing with drain lines. In this specific project, the plumbing lines were running through the middle of the intended open-kitchen concept and island. Since it was impossible to remove or relocate them, we had to get creative. As a solution, we decided to incorporate the plumbing chase as a design feature by cladding it and integrating it into the kitchen design.”

Scene Change

Ballentine Architects and Adam Hunter’s recent collaboration is featured in Modern Luxury Interiors magazine.

A mix of rich and airy elements defines Adam Hunter’s West Hollywood home, where moody, magical vibes preside.

The Project

When you learn that Adam Hunter performed on Broadway for a decade, it’s unsurprising that the in-demand designer’s interiors have a decisedly dramatic flair. When updating his own West Hollywood Home, Hunter - who counts stars like Neil Patrick Harris, Sutton Foster and Travis Barker as clients - knew he had to go bold with a complete overhaul to get what he wanted.

The Priorities

“This was another opportunity for me to express my creativity through designing a home, and this time - the client was myself,” says Hunter. “So the scope was to incorporate aspects of design, materials, textures [and] colors that I loved and have always wanted to experience in my daily life, things I wanted to live with.” A kitted-out closet was a must for the fashion-lover, as was an airy open environment throughout the home. “My primary focus was to personalize this space to reflect my style,” he adds. “The finishes and color scheme were a departure for me, embracing a moodier, richer and darker palette. My aim was to evoke the ambiance of a modernist den from the ‘70s with a hint of magic.”

The Inspiration

“During the design phase of this project, I found myself binge-watching Game of Thrones and [was] particularly inspired by Cersei Lannister’s final ensemble, a velvety deep burgundy piece that resonated with me for its regal elegance and undeniable sense of strength,” says Hunter, who planned to incorporate these rich tones into the living room furniture, decor and artwork. He also had a clear vision for the primary. “I’ve always dreamt of sleeping among the clouds,” he shares.

The Team

Hunter assembled a pro team for the project, including Ben Ballentine of Ballentine Architects, Oren Goldman of Elite Remodeling and landscape architect Brent Green. “one of the most important people on my team for this project was Asaf Amario, my master finisher who created the beautiful plastered dropped ceiling in the living room,” he shares. “I also sought the expertise of Carlos Antonio, a remarkably skilled art curator with whom I collaborated in selecting the artwork for my home.”

The Living Room

Hunter’s Game of Thrones inspo shines through in this space, where a deeply hued Monarch Fire rug by Alexander McQueen for The Rug Company sets the scene. Artist Matt Gagnon’s colorful Light StacK draws the eye in, as do sculptural accents from Coup d’Etat, Blackman Cruz and a custom sofa covered in deep velvet fabric by Rose Uniacke.

The Kitchen

A mix of bronze, marble, custom plaster and wood creates a moody, sexy atmosphere in the kitchen. Instead of tile, Hunter installed a bronze metal backsplash from Amuneal. Cabinetry from Mass Beverly plays well with the cantilevered island made from Magma Gold granite, and Circle dining chairs from Overgaard & Dyrman add a graphic touch. “The artwork is a stunning commission called Moontide X made by the incredibly talented artist Dougall Paulson,” says Hunter who noted that Gina Dewitt of Kneedler Fauchere made the connection. “It incorporates more than two miles of silver-plated, enameled jewelry wire.”

The Primary Bathroom

Hunter applied a more-is-more mentality in his bathroom, where silverly blue Azul Nuvolato marble takes center stage. The Stone Industry incorporated the striking material into the sinks, tile, tub, shower and vanities. Waterworks plumbing and towels, and Dunn Edwards Foggy Day paint round things out.

The Primary Bedroom

To bring his dream of “sleeping among the clouds” to life, Hunter lined his bedroom with Pierre Frey’s cloudy Nubem wallpaper and created a custom bed topped with custom bedding by Chaz Stevens. A shearling rug from Rosemary Hallgarten and lighting by Lindsey Adelmen contribute to the airy feeling. Still, Hunter’s favorite aspect of the space - and the entire home - is the glass box closet by Rimadesio. “I’ve always wanted an Apple Store element in my home,” he says. “The glass box just sits in the corner of my bedroom and is the perfect moment for this space.”

The Challenge

“Typically, my personal style doesn’t gravitate toward vibrant and colorful spaces, making the living room palette, particularly it’s red hues, a significant hurdle,” Hunter explains. “This departure from my usual aesthetic preferences required a considerable shift in approach.” Instead of opting for a complete overhaul or shying away from the bold color, I chose to embrace it.”

The Outcome

After 2.5 years, the designer finally has the home of his dreams. “It feels luxurious,” he shares. “I absolutely feel that the home is complete.”

Creating Memories and Moments

Ross Woodley, Landscape Architect of EPTDESIGN sat down with Ben Ballentine of Ballentine Architects Studio for a lively conversation about creating residences that feel like home.

Making a client’s dream become a reality is a skill that Los Angeles architect Benjamin Ballentine from Ballentine Architect Studios understands best. Designing a luxe custom space for a client doesn’t happen overnight. Ben takes his time listening to his clients, asking deep heartfelt questions, learning how they live and more importantly how they want to function in their new space. It’s only once he truly understands the client and their dreams about their new investment that he starts to dive into the landscape to understand the space, where does the sunlight strike in the morning? How does the breeze cool the space? Where should someone enter, sit, entertain, swim, meditate, or cook to have the best experience the home can bring them?

Benjamins’ personalized touch, combined with his ability to collaborate seamlessly with developers, designers, builders, contractors, city planners, and property owners, makes him an asset to any project. This article dives into two uniquely special and different projects that are a collaboration between EPT Design and Ballentine Architects Studio, Sunset Plaza Road, in West Hollywood, California and The Glen Oaks Residence in Montecito, California.

Vernon Residence: A Beach Bungalow Transformation

In 2017, Ballentine Architects designed a remodel for the Vernon Residence, a Beach Bungalow in Venice Beach, California. The 1,300 square foot home was reconfigured and the exterior was refinished to preserve the original Craftsman style.

By removing the existing dropped ceilings, BAS utilized the building’s footprint without changing the building height. This gives the illusion of an enlarged living area, yet no square footage was added to the home. In vaulting the ceilings and blurring the boundary between inside and outside, the redesigned home has an airy feel that is full of natural light, the perfect combination for the quintessential Beach Bungalow.

The interior of the home was made up of three bedrooms and two bathrooms, a small living area and an outdated kitchen. The new design established a few major transformations. One of the dramatic changes, and something you notice immediately upon entering, is the new ceiling height. The vaulted ceilings reveal exposed beams and recessed down lighting, which adds an incredible amount of depth and character to the new space.

Tucked away within the Entryway is a newly designed Powder Room. An additional amenity that doesn’t sacrifice any of the newly created open space. Situated near the entry, the Powder Room provides guests a restroom without having to encroach on the private space in the home.

Past the Entryway and Powder Room, the newly configured Great Room combines the existing Living Room and Master Suite into one large open space. The new Living Room incorporates built-in bookcases including a custom work station, as well as a new fireplace for chilly nights.

Additionally, folding glass doors provide access to the front yard, blending the indoor and outdoor living areas seamlessly to create a massive space for entertaining and socializing. New concrete patio pads and fresh landscaping enhance the functionality of the yard encouraging outdoor activities.

At the back of the house was the existing Kitchen. In need of an update, BAS transformed the Kitchen and Laundry Room into the new Master Suite. This provided the opportunity to incorporate new single lite french doors that provide views and direct access to the new fountain at the ensuite Sun Patio.

Another major aspect of the remodel and reconfiguration is the Kitchen. Taking the place of the existing living and dining area, the new linear Kitchen incorporates all new custom cabinetry, a double waterfall edge island and an adorable breakfast nook. Open to the Living Room, the Kitchen completes the Great Room open concept and provides a central gathering space for the home.

Completed in 2018, the Vernon Residence is our favorite Beach Bungalow transformation. View the full gallery here.
