Westchester
The JW3 Residence Project rejuvenates an older home with a remodel and garage conversion. Located in Westchester, a charming neighborhood in Los Angeles, the design took on the task of modernizing the home to match the relaxed lifestyle of the area within a lively city.
Upon entry, a Great Room with vaulted ceilings and an open floor plan feature natural light beaming in from clerestory windows and skylights onto the welcoming natural tones of the home’s accents. The newly configured living room houses a modern white stucco fireplace and light flooding the space from two panel sliding glass doors leading to the front yard. Past the living room, a wall separating the space from the rest of the home was removed, revealing what became a gorgeous linear Great Room. Parallel glass doors on either end of the Great Room allow light to travel through the entire length of the space, efficiently reducing the need for artificial lighting to be utilized during the entirety of a day. A monochromatic white is featured throughout the residence, but black detailing is applied on fixtures, window panes, and decorative elements to create a bold statement to contrast the clean white look. The Kitchen is just past the living room and illustrates this divergence best, with elegant white cabinetry and Caesarstone quartz countertops to contrast the darker appliances and fixtures. The dining table sits in front of the spacious Kitchen island, giving the space a functional feel with everyday constituents being close and accessible. At the end of the Great Room sits the family room fit with a direct vent fireplace, powder room, and three panel accordion glass door to the lush backyard and Accessory Dwelling Unit.
The Accessory Dwelling Unit is a studio space that remains consistent with the main residence, where natural light floods the room through sliding glass doors and skylights and black finishes are utilized to oppose the natural monochromatic tones. This studio contains direct access to the backyard with a two panel glass slider door similarly to the Primary suite, which features a five ribbon fireplace and an entrance from the end of the Great Room. The Primary Bathroom further continues consistency in the space similar to the kitchen with the clean white walls, cabinetry, and countertops as a contrasting feature for black detailing. Two Secondary Bedrooms also exist, each home to spacious closets with their own ensuite bathrooms. These bedrooms also remain consistent to the residence’s theming, remaining clean and neutral. Both also are accessed along the leftmost wall of the Great Room, which holds a laundry closet that occupies minimal space and is neatly hidden away. This wall is first seen upon entering the home with art to match the vibrant red accent door that welcomes visitors and occupants into the home, and further builds a gorgeous contrast to what resides on the interior.
