Venice Canal Historic District
The Venice Craftsman is a tribute to historical Venice architecture, modeled after the Craftsman homes built in Venice in the early 1900's. Details became a major point of emphasis in this project, where historic Craftsman architecture was closely researched so that traditional elements could correctly be applied and implemented. At first glance, a notable stone walkway wraps around the home, creating an inviting garden space. A large patio allows for an initial interaction with the property, where the expansive area hints at the open floor plan exhibited throughout the residence.
Upon entering the space, a living area is presented alongside a spacious kitchen that leads to an open dining room. Clean lines and natural materials simplify the space and allow the details and materiality of the cabinetry to make a presence and additionally cause the residence to truly differ from the “stucco box” commonly seen in Venice. Consistency is obvious throughout these spaces, truly preserving the integrity the residence holds and providing a functional feel. Fleetwood glass sliding doors, with Craftsman mullion detailing seen on windows throughout the residence, are strategically placed in the dining room to bring in a subtle modern element and create a convertible indoor outdoor space when desired. Also housing the staircase to the second story-addition to this residence, the dining room is a central gathering area for traveling throughout the different spaces. Crossing into the back porches leads to views of the nearby Venice Canals and charming courtyard with a continuation of the stone walkway from the front of the residence.
Moving up-stairs allows for reiteration of the importance of the home’s wood detailing and traditional feel as a stained glass window welcomes inhabitants to a more private space. Custom cabinetry can be found in the ensuite restrooms on the second floor alongside various bedrooms. A sunny patio with another unique stained glass window at its french door entry ties the residence to its traditional roots in contrast to the sliding doors to the first-story porch. Repeated elements such as the handcrafted oak cabinetry and stained glass windows welcoming guests truly tie together the residence in a way that is personal and reminiscent to longtime Venice residents.
